So yeah, I decided yesterday afternoon to go to w00tstock 2.2. I told my father and his first response was “You can’t see Wil Wheaton, he’s Sheldon’s arch-enemy!” This made me laugh out loud. I then put on my Green Lantern shirt and ventured in to the city. I won’t bore you with the HORRIBLE FUCKING TRAFFIC I dealt with, but I eventually made it to Park West and found a seat amongst my fellow nerds.
First things first, all the words, images, and videos in this post that are done by me are released under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License. I am also including the Wheaton Clause in this one… Don’t Be A Dick.

The event started fairly promptly and we were immediately informed that “3 hours of Geeks & Music” could be anywhere from 3 to 5 hours. Not a single person was bothered by this. Wil Wheaton started off the show and was… well, Wil. In other words, he was completely freaking awesome. In fact, every single person there was just great. I haven’t laughed so hard in a long long time. One of the things announced at almost the very beginning of the show was that Len Peralta would be drawing a special edition w00tstock Chicago poster… that would ONLY be available to those of us at the show. Oh yeah, and he would be drawing the entire thing ON STAGE during the show. They asked for ideas for the poster… and used the interwebs to get it. #chistock was our hashtag, and we made use of it. I did order one of the posters after the show because it was fucking epic. I’ll post a picture of it once I receive it.
Quick note, due to my stupidity and not checking my camera battery before I went in to the theater I have no good pictures and only some slightly okay quality videos. If I had known how open they would be to recording of the show I would have tried to get a good video camera and record the entire FIVE HOURS of awesome.

First in this month’s book reviews: Chimera by Rob Thurman.
I’m a huge fan of Rob Thurman’s work so that may influence my review just a little bit, but I’m trying to keep this objective. The premise of the story in Chimera is that Stefan is a Russian mobster who’s little brother, Lukas, was kidnapped 10 years ago. In those 10 years he has spent all of his free time and money searching for him. Searching even after the police, FBI, and his father have given up. At the beginning of the book Stefan gets word from the man he has searching for Lukas has finally found him.

So, yesterday evening I went to see Cory Doctorow do a reading and discussion about his new book For The Win. I haven’t finished the book so this is not a review of that… this is more of a quick talk about the reading and meeting Cory.
First off, Cory is an extremely nice guy. He was extremely personable and seemed like a guy I could hang out and shoot the shit with no problems.

Actually… the title pretty much says it all. The game is complete win. I am just extremely fucking bad. Like… really really bad. Need to play more.
I’ve only played a few games, and haven’t played an RTS in years. So… I am extremely bad. I’m working on it… I’m losing by less each time, but still definitely losing. I should go see if there are any types of strategies online for people with no skill.
The game is absolutely beautiful. The controls are easy to grasp and it’s tons of fun… even losing I have a lot of fun playing. I need a lot more practice though. Maybe I’ll try some other races. As Terran I just keep getting owned. Maybe try Protoss or Zerg next time.

So… the Halo: Reach(henceforth H:R) Multiplayer Beta started Monday. Now, when it started it was… rough to say the least. The servers were up and down like a pogo stick. Even when the servers were up it could take 20-30 minutes to find a game. After some heroic work by the folks over at Bungie things smoothed out quite a bit. Now, the Beta is running incredibly smoothly and the first day headaches seem to have been cleared up.
First things first, for all the Halo fans out there who, like me, got tired of Halo 3 and moved on to other games your prayers have been answered. H:R has everything we loved about the previous games, and has fixed most of the glaring issues. I’m actually having an incredible time playing Halo again. I even don’t mind playing objective game types(CTF, Stockpile, KotH, etc).
The New Weapons:

Thats right. The awesome Magnum pistol from Halo 1 has returned. It works fairly well in close quarters out to medium range. It really shines though is in Team Swat games. Headshots halfway across the map with the pistol? Easily done. It also works great after you’ve taken someone’s shield out. Get that headshot in and they are going down. I’ve been trying to spend a lot of time playing with just this as I can see it becoming a very good “go to” weapon for all around carnage.

The Battle Rifle from Halo 3 has been replaced by the DMR(Designated Marksman Rifle) and honestly… I love it. It’s a great medium to long range single shot semi-automatic weapon. This is not the weapon you want for close combat as it is virtually useless at short range. This is the other weapon you are given in Team Swat games and is truly almost sniper rifle accurate. Overall this is a great evolution of the Battle Rifle. It took a little while to get used to, but now that I’ve got the hang of it it is really a great weapon.
